I was trying to think of how an animal might build up metal claws and I wondered if molten metal would attach to claws dipped in it, growing much like wax candles are made. I also wondered if lava could get hot enough for all the volatile compounds to boil off, leaving nearly pure metal. I'm not sure how well this would work, but I drew the creature below with adaptations to be able to stand back far from the oppressive heat of the lava while dipping in its claws that it uses to pierce the shells of large, turtle-like animals. Each of its four limbs are connected by tubes containing motor control nerves and blood vessels. When placed in a socket, clawed fingers hold them in place. Three of the four of creature's compound eyes are visible, as is its tongue.
