This is an animal, but it is also a decomposer. This fish from the planet Punlitorea rolls its head in the mud and half-decomposed plant matter on river bottoms until it cakes on into a helmet all the way around. Root-like growths from its tongue extend into the hardened mud, digesting and absorbing it, causing it to begin to collapse inward, forming cracks. When this happens, the animal again rolls to apply a fresh layer of mud. The mud is continually "eaten" from the inside and passed to the anus while the outside forms a layer protecting the brain (the skull is incomplete in this fish). The fins along the sides take the place of gills as oxygen cannot penetrate the helmet.
