A Turing test is a test given to a computer to see if it truly comprehends its instructions or if it is merely following a program. Given enough time and questions, one can usually tell if they have been chatting with another human or a computer. I notice quite often that some people seem to operate like computers. They hear my words and respond but the response is inappropriate. It covers the same subject but it doesn’t make sense. I might assume they have poor hearing, but it happens with the written word as well. Arrange a sentence in an unconventional way, and they will ignore the context and take a completely different meaning from it than was meant.
We start out life fully experiencing everything with no rules, but as we age we learn from experience which rules are useful. Our behavior becomes ever more programmed as we encounter only situations very similar to those we have experienced before. Only when we encounter novel situations do we ever truly think – but by not thinking, sometimes we don’t even realize we are in a novel situation and we react inappropriately. Personalities are nothing but sets of rules.
