There are issues that are controversial because large numbers of people take positions on both sides, and issues that are not controversial because well over 95% of the population agrees. There are issues that are controversial because they involve matters of such importance that they cause some people great emotional distress and many are willing to fight over them, and there are issues that are not controversial because they involve matters of little importance that nobody cares much about. Thus, there is no such thing as a “controversial issue.” It is how other people take it that makes it so. I can’t help it if you vehemently disagree with me on an issue that is clear-cut and shouldn’t matter to you. I can’t tell ahead of time how something will be taken by society.
