I recently read Space Battles, edited by Bryan Thomas Schmidt. It's hard to review compilation books, because some of the stories are so much better than others. I was looking for battles featuring lots of intelligent tactical maneuvers, and I was not disappointed. Bait And Switch and Between The Rocks are both good in this respect. There is also much speculation on the future evolution of humanity, how we might engineer ourselves into distinct races (The Thirteens) or adapt ourselves to live perpetually in space (Guard Dog and Final Defense). There was some good in most of the others, too, but they were still quite simple and nothing special. One of them (Space Battle Of The Bands) was downright silly. Overall, the book is on the plus side, but not amazing.
