These fish live in total blackness at the bottom of the ocean near hot water vents laced with toxic chemicals and are prey to larger fish. In places where two or more vents sit closeby, the jets mixing above as they widen, these fish have learned to hide in the narrow wedge of safe water adjoining these jets where larger fish cannot follow. To remain so close to the turbulent boundary of hot and cold water, these fish have long sensory quills that can withstand these extremes.
