Nathaniel and his Stuffians protect a village of large centipedes threatened by a three-eyed rat-bear with several horns wrapped asymmetrically around its head and partially fused with each other. Haticat and Fred are injured in the fighting, and Nathaniel has to sew their eyes and noses back on. There are veins of mildly explosive rock running under the surface of the planet. Strong vibrations can set them off and both sides use this to their advantage. The creature explains to Nathaniel the concept of mercy and Nathaniel spares its life. The creature then turns on him and Nathaniel requests mercy. He does not receive it and the creature explains that mercy is never guaranteed. Nathaniel defeats it again, only for the creature to beg for mercy again. He beats it repeatedly and he lets it go repeatedly. Finally he kills it in anger, answering its pleas by saying he has no mercy left.
The planet experiences large tides from its twin planet that takes up much of the sky. The plants here are green, but the trees have orange bark. Most plants smell like pasta. Others smell like rubber, habanero, garlic, or fried chicken. The centipedes wear three backpacks or more. The explosive rock is made of microscopic springs held under compression by microscopic loops. Vibrations dislodge some of the loops, letting the springs rapidly extend, creating a chain reaction of still more vibrations.
